HOW IT BEGAN
The idea came about after a toddler tantrum.
My four-year-old Luna was adamant that she would not go for
a walk outside unless we both dressed up like Silly Billies.
SO WE DID.
This then unintentionally became our weekly Sunday afternoon
ritual, dad and daughter dressed like nongs, roaming the streets
of Marrickville.
It was super fun! people honked horns and dog walkers asked
us why? The one recurring thing that was always mentioned
was “WHAT A TERRIFIC IDEA”!
I thought to myself, well, it's not really an “idea” idea, it's more
of just having fun and walking around in dress ups!
It was when one dog Walker looked at me like I was a weirdo that
I realised that for some people, this could be the absolute worst
idea in the world! The antithesis of fun.
I mean imagine walking the streets in broad daylight dressed
like a clown princess for no reason, but for the sole purpose
of being silly.
That's when it dawned on me that this wasn’t just a Sunday
afternoon idea for myself and Luna.
Maybe if the thought of dressing up and looking like a twit scares
the poo out of you, then this may be the very thing you need to be reminded of your playfulness. A sad thing most of us tend to deny ourselves after puberty.
Maybe the Silly Billie Walk could work more broadly, enabling
the uptight dads and grumpy nanas who have forgotten their
sense of fun.
AND… maybe if everyone else is doing it! we can provide
safety in “dumb-bers”
So, one thing led to another and after I put a few posts on
Instagram and invited people to join me. It grew and it grew some more, just a random gang of strangers walking with no purpose aimlessly in the sunshine.
